November: What's in season?

With November in full swing, we look at what produce is at it's prime.

If you are a fan of cooking for the season then you will find this list of ingredients helpful when planning your meals for the month of November.

  • Apple
  • Brussels sprouts
  • Cabbage
  • Celeriac
  • Chestnut
  • Clams
  • Cranberry
  • Horseradish
  • Jerusalem artichoke
  • Kale
  • Mussels
  • Oyster
  • Parsnip
  • Pheasant
  • Pomegranate
  • Pumpkin
  • Salsify
  • Satsuma
  • Scallop
  • Sea bass
  • Swede
  • Truffle
  • Venison
  • Wild duck
  • Winkles

As you will see, fans of seafood will be in their element this month with the likes of scallops, winkles, mussels and clams featuring on the hot list. Great opportunity to venture out of your comfort zone if you aren't a fan. Mussels lend themselves well to simplistic dishes that not only favour few ingredients, but also take a short amount of time to cook. BBC Good Food Magazine have a wide variety of dishes that include mussels as the main ingredient.

Root vegetables also feature on November's list. What a great time to be preparing soups and stews. Ideal for the cold that we are all starting to feel as Winter draws ever closer.

Going out of season this month, we see the likes of:

  • Grouse
  • Quince
  • Swiss chard
  • Wild mushrooms

These ingredients are seen to be somewhat 'specialist' and therefore may not make a big impact on your shopping list this month. Look for alternatives to these items and maybe even try something completely new from the list of 'in season' above.
